twitter and trends

February 9th, 2009

Getting into this whole twitter thing properly now. We have a business twitter now for london weather with more cities to follow. i find it interesting that short term trends tend to make more of an impact using twitter than other media.

For example, Google is always behind due to its spider reactive nature. msn is for chatting away and not really spreading a topic for the masses. blogging is great – if you have the foot fall. twitter ia in its element as philip scofield found with the “That’s my hedge” trend that took the uk by storm last week and brought twitter into the homes via Good Morning. So heres the thing. twitter is so simple quick and reaches people on mass via a different means than other methodologies. This can prove to (in the right way) form a good basis for product (re)launches and all kinds of merketing strategies.

Ok, it appears that the Twitter phenonemon has finally landed in the UK, thanks partly to Chris Moyles, Wossy and Stephen Fry. There are some fantastically easy ways to update Twitter programmatically using PHP 5 which are available in any standard Google search or be creative and do your own using a CURL form post.

Iphone apps

August 7th, 2008

Unless you have been living underneath a rock, you will have heard, used or own an iPhone with it’s v2 OS.

There are the entertaining attributes such as pint pouring simulators and touchscreen games but the thing that is openng my eyes very quickly is the concept of creating bespoke applications for iPhone users that would have been up for web 2.0-ing. I can envisage that over the next 6 months there will be a surge of shopping “helper” or price comparisons that utilize the iPhone’s interface.

Maybe I’ll write the first! Watch this space.

Fascinators site

April 25th, 2008

I have co-created a website for a family member which sells the one thing i would never think about when constructing a site… Fascinators.

For those who don’t know what a fascinator is, according to Wikipedia, it is

a headpiece worn on the hair and worn almost exclusively by women. Fascinators are commonly made with feathers, flowers and/or beads. They attach to the hair by a comb, headband or clip.[1] They are an adornment for formal attire and are an alternative to wearing a hat. They are particularly popular at premium horse racing events, such as the Melbourne Cup or the Grand National. They may also be worn at weddings by guests, and also as an alternative to a bridal veil.

The site is written in PHP5 with a Mysql5 backend, the graphical elements have been designed to be very chic. In terms of SEO, the site is part way through transformation for all the links to be SEO friendly, and soon a mailer plugin will be created so that registered users can keep in touch with new products, announcements and shows.

Proprietor’s should write blogs

April 24th, 2008

In a meeting with a customer today, I found myself trying to talk them round into my thinking that in order for Google to see natural growth in their e-commerce business website, product ranges are great, but nothing is as rich as good quality copy. I asked them to consider the proprietor writing about their great products, great services and great history. The notion of a business owner taking time out of their day to write about product ranges and what excites them about the company or service thats offered is surely going to be a place that users will want to come back to, bookmark and share. With that in mind, will create good quality inbound links, thus helping their SEO whilst increasing the amount and quality of qualified copy on their site. Time will tell if the customer will take my advice on board, and if they do, this will be the first place that will be linking to it!

Internet Business Promoter (IBP) SEO Tool

April 24th, 2008

Found a wonderful tool called Internet Business Promoter, which has been shortend to IBP for ease of memory. Not only does it do a lot of the useful things in regard to figuring out your main competitors for keywords, but it will calculate keyword density on your pages versus the keyword density on your 10 main competitors for the targeted keywords. A time-saving tool if nothing else. Quite pricey, but those in the trade would welcome the spend as SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) does appear to be a growing industry and those in the know are enjoying a bit of a boom.
